한 농부의 당나귀(donkey)가 우물에 빠졌다(fall down in a well). 당나귀는 살려달라며 애처롭게 울어댔다(cry piteously).
농부는 어찌할 바를 몰라 허둥댔다(be at a loss). 무엇을 어떻게 해야 할지 생각해 내려고 애를 썼지만(try to figure out what to do) 별다른 방법이 떠오르지 않았다. 어떻게든 당나귀를 살리기 위해(in order to save the donkey’s life) 이웃 사람들을 불러 도와달라고 하소연했다(beg for help).
그러자 이웃들은 삽을 들고(take up their shovels) 우물 속에 흙을 퍼붓기 시작했다(start pouring dirt into the well). 당나귀는 계속 처절하게 울었다(cry horribly).
그런데 얼마 후(after a while) 모두가 놀랍게도(to everyone’s surprise) 갑자기 조용해졌다(quiet down). 이상하다고 여겨 우물 안을 내려다보다가(look down into the well) 다들 깜짝 놀랐다(be startled).
한 삽 한 삽 흙이 당나귀 등 위로 떨어질(fall on his back) 때마다 당나귀는 놀라운 행동을 하고(do something amazing) 있었다. 등에 쏟아진 흙을 털어내고는(shake it off) 그 흙 위로 한 걸음 한 걸음 올라서고 있는(climb step by step on top of it) 것이었다.
우물 안 당나귀 위에 삽으로 흙을 퍼부을수록(shovel dirt on top of the donkey) 당나귀가 올라오는 위치는 점점 높아졌다. 그러더니 당나귀는 삽시간에(in no time) 우물 가장자리로 올라섰고(step up over the edge of the well), 어느새 위기에서 벗어나 무사히 빠져나가는(safely escape from the crisis) 것이었다.
수렁에 빠졌지만(get bogged down by it) 끝까지 포기하지 않았기 때문에 그 깊은 우물에서 빠져나올(climb out of the deep well) 수 있었던 것이다.
☞ 인생은 너에게 온갖 종류의 흙을 퍼부을(throw all kinds of dirt on you) 것이다. 그 흙을 털어버리고 (shake it off) 그 위로 한 걸음 더 올라서라.
Life is going to throw all kinds of dirt at you. Shake it off and take one more step upward.
