“‘Idol-si’? What on earth does it mean?” This article explains Korean slangs used in idol fan communities and online communities. [Editor’s Note]
On a bus or other public transportation, people naturally grasp the handles to maintain balance. In doing so, one often catches a glimpse of others’ wrists. In the past, a significant number of individuals used to wear wristwatches.
In a slightly exaggerated sense, these days it seems like at least seven out of ten individuals have smartwatches on their wrists. People have become increasingly interested in the features of smartwatches, and here’s a recommendation on a feature that k-pop fans would love to see added to their watches.
Today’s K-slang word is “아이돌시(Idol-si).”
When expressing time, we use the format of “A hour (si) B minute (boon) C second (cho).” The term “아이돌시(idol-si)” that we are discussing today takes the “si” directly from this format, which means hour.
The concept is simple. We use the term “idol-si” to represent the birthday of one’s favorite idol member. For example, let’s say your favorite idol named Hana has a birthday on May 1st. Then, 5:01 would be “Hana-si (Hana’s hour).” The example could use for BTS, Blackpink, NewJeans, Zerobaseone and so on.
What could be cuter than getting a notification on your smartwatch saying “Hana-si” when it turns 5:01? Hopefully, Samsung and Apple will consider this as a valid suggestion.
