“‘Kka-Ppa?’ What on earth does it mean?” This article explains Korean slangs used in idol fan communities and online communities. [Editor’s Note]
In pop culture, dual-personality characters are fascinating. Marvel’s Hulk and Dr. Bruce Banner are examples of this: when he’s angry, Hulk emerges and smashes everything, while in normal times, he’s the intelligent, mild-mannered Dr. Banner. The idol industry also has a term to describe such dual personality characters.
Today’s K-slang word is “까빠(Kka-Ppa).”
The meaning is simple. It refers to being both a fan and an anti-fan. “까(Kka)” is a slang for an anti-fan, while “빠(Ppa)” represents a fan.
Nothing in the world is perfect. That’s why it’s impossible to like everything about your idol. Even as a fan, there might be parts you don’t like. But that’s not what “Kka-Ppa” is.
Kka-Ppa pretends to be a fan and lists praise. Kka-Ppas are exist everywhere even in fans of BTS, fans of Blackpink, fans of NewJeans and fans of Zerobaseone. However, if you read between the lines, it’s often a subtle way of bashing the idol, for example, “Idol member ‘A’ has gained so much weight that her mom doesn’t even recognize her, and I love that because it makes her look healthy.” It’s not constructive criticism; rather, it’s just sneaky anti-fan activity.
Though the word sounds cute, its actual meaning is quite eerie. We encourage healthy fan activities.
