President Yoon Suk-yeol announced on the 31st that October 2nd will be designated as a temporary holiday. This will give the country a total of six days of golden holidays between the four-day Chuseok holiday, which runs from September 28th to October 1st, and National Foundation Day on Oct. 3.
During an emergency economic and civil affairs meeting held at the presidential office on this day, President Yoon stated, “October 2nd will be designated as a temporary holiday, and along with distributing 600,000 accommodation discount coupons, highway tolls will be waived during the holiday period.”
President Yoon further explained, “We need to revitalize domestic tourism to boost domestic consumption. We will work on expanding flights and simplifying entry procedures to ensure that the increase in foreign tourists translates to the activation of domestic economic activities.” He added, “We will also enhance payment convenience through mobile payment methods and strengthen local promotion of Korean tourism.”
The proposal to designate October 2nd as a temporary holiday is expected to be reviewed and approved during the Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on September 5th.
President Yoon stated regarding the upcoming Chuseok holidays, “We will not maintain last year’s prices for Chuseok gift sets, but rather lower them by more than 5 percent to ensure that citizens can enjoy a more generous holiday.”
He also mentioned, “We will expand the supply of Chuseok gift sets to the largest scale ever, and provide support worth ₩67 billion for discounts on agricultural, livestock, and fisheries products to stabilize their supply and prices (US$1=₩1322).”
President Yoon stated, “We will also promptly and boldly support the seafood industry, which is facing difficulties due to recent fake news and false propaganda. We will actively respond to baseless rumors and false information, and allocate an additional fund of ₩80 billion this year to promote the consumption of our seafood.”
He further emphasized, “In particular, we will offer discounts of up to 60 percent on key seafood products and support the purchase of our seafood conveniently at affordable prices through the refund of Onnuri gift certificates, whether online or at traditional markets.”
The meeting was organized for the discussion of measures to stabilize civilian life, including Chuseok holiday expenses, the presidential office reported.
Deputy Prime Minister of Economy and Finance, Choo Kyung-ho, reported on various measures, including “Holiday Price Management and Livelihood Support,” “Domestic Consumption Vitality Package,” and “Promotion of Seafood Consumption.” Ministers of relevant ministries discussed detailed plans during the meeting.
