North Korea hacked the internal network of the Russian satellite development company “Sputnix” in early last year and extracted technology related to ultra-small satellite bodies, as confirmed on the 6th. It has also been discovered that North Korea has successfully hacked “Uralvagonzavod,” Russia’s largest tank production company, and “Almaz-Antey,” a producer of anti-aircraft missiles, including the S-300 known as the “Russian Patriot.” While North Korea and Russia are known to be planning a summit meeting in mid-month to promote a large-scale arms deal, it has been revealed that North Korea has been stealing Russian technology behind its back for several years.

According to a report from the cyber security firm “Genius Security Center,” obtained by this newspaper, it has been revealed that North Korean hacking units clandestinely installed a backdoor into the systems of Sputnix between January and March of last year, allowing them to extract a substantial amount of information. Sputnix is a privately-owned satellite company associated with the Russian Space Research Institute. It is suspected that North Korea obtained some of the technology, including design blueprints for ultra-small satellite bodies, from this company. It is also analyzed that this hacking played a role in North Korea’s advancement in space technology, as evidenced by their two reconnaissance-satellite-equipped space launches this year alone.

It has been reported that North Korean hackers successfully infiltrated the internal networks of the Russia’s Almaz-Antey, known for its development of anti-aircraft missile systems, between May and August 2020. The North Korean hackers reportedly gained access to various types of information, including personal information of developers and missile component details, from this company’s internal network. In mid-2019, they were also found to have hacked design blueprints of ”T-14 Armata,” Russia’s 3.5th-generation main battle tank, which was being developed and produced by Uralvagonzavod. North Korea is also known to have repeatedly hacked defense companies involved in advanced weapons such as hypersonic transport and ICBMs over the years.

Bang Jong-Gwan, Director of the Power Development Center at the Korea Research Institute for National Strategy (KRINS), stated, “Russia is not only North Korea’s top weapons sales partner but also a target for technology theft.”
