Samsung Electronics unveiled its first artificial intelligence (AI) powered smartphone, the Galaxy S24 series, on Jan. 17. Global tech influencers praised the new device’s advanced AI features and improved display. But they noted that its design remains unchanged from its predecessor, the Galaxy S20, and closely resembles Apple’s iPhone series.
American YouTuber Marques Brownlee, who has more than 18 million followers, commented on the Galaxy S24 series’ photo editing features. “[The Galaxy S24 series] uses AI to erase or move unnecessary objects in photos, and videos can be easily switched to slow motion with a single touch,” he said. He also mentioned that the ‘Circle to Search’ feature, which allows users to search for information simply by drawing a circle on the screen, is “fast and super useful.”
British YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss said he is skeptical about AI-powered real-time translation and video editing, as these features already exist in the form of apps. But he acknowledged the advantages of being able to use these features without an internet connection.
The Galaxy S24 series also mainly received positive feedback for its brighter screens. The phones - Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 smarphones - have a maximum brightness of 2,600 nits, up from 1,750 nits in the Galaxy 23 series. The Galaxy S24 Ultra features Gorilla Armor, a smartphone cover material manufactured by U.S. materials company Corning. Corning’s Gorilla Armor reduces reflection by up to 75 percent compared to a regular glass surface.
Notably, the Galaxy S24 series has adopted a flat panel display for the first time in nine years, moving away from the edge display with curved corners. “While this might be great for some people, for those who liked curved displays, this might be disappointing, “ said Tech influencer Alvin. “But, I think we can agree that it makes using the S pen a lot easier,” he added.
“[The Galaxy S24 series’ display] has improved 50 percent in brightness compared to its predecessor, and Corning’s Gorilla Armor significantly reduces light reflection,” said Korean tech influencer IFFU. He also added that the screen is more durable against scratches and other damage.
However, influencers pointed out that there were no noticeable changes in terms of design.
“Galaxy S24 Ultra model has a titanium frame, while the regular and plus models have a matte finish on the sides and back,” said Korean IT review channel THE EDIT. “In terms of appearance, it’s similar to the iPhone except for the camera arrangement.”
