The ‘Galaxy S24′ series was introduced by Samsung Electronics at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, on Jan 17 (local time), leaving an initial impression of a “lack of innovation.” A closer look at external designs reveals a close resemblance to its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 series, making it challenging to discern differences.
However, the Galaxy S24 brings forth a revolutionary charm not present in its predecessor. It incorporates real-time call interpretation and text message translation, executed through artificial intelligence (AI), along with high-quality camera performance.
The most captivating aspect of the experience is the real-time call interpretation. Chosunbiz tested the feature by engaging in a call with a Spanish taxi driver in Korean.
Speaking in Korean, a Chosunbiz reporter informed the driver, “I am currently standing at the front entrance of the white building, but I don’t see your taxi.” The reporter’s words were swiftly translated into Spanish in real-time and conveyed to the driver. In response, the driver stated in Spanish, “My taxi number starts with 8V, and the color is blue. I am currently parked at the corner of the white building.” This information was promptly translated back into Korean and relayed to the reporter. The reporter then communicated in Korean, “Please tell me the street name you are on. I will come there.” The taxi driver, once again in Spanish, said, “I am on 49th Street” and ended the call. The entire conversation took less than a minute.
Applying the same method, the reporter called a nearby restaurant and made a reservation in Korean, stating, “I want to make a reservation,” and “Three people will come at 5:00 PM this Tuesday.” The reservation was successfully completed within 30 seconds.
The real-time call interpretation feature of the Galaxy S24 operates seamlessly without requiring separate app installation or an internet connection. Enabled by the on-device AI (Galaxy AI) embedded in the device, users can activate it by pressing the ‘Call Assistant’ button and then the ‘Real-time Interpretation’ button when a call is connected. This functionality is applicable to any incoming call, offering automatic translation for 13 languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai.
The real-time text message translation feature is also intriguing, automatically translating texts received in English into Korean and vice versa. This functionality extends beyond the Galaxy ‘Messages’ app, integrated into major domestic and international mobile messengers through the Samsung Keyboard. When using the Galaxy S24, real-time translation functionality can be utilized on popular messaging apps such as KakaoTalk, Line, and Facebook Messenger.
The Galaxy AI plays a significant role in camera functionality, with Samsung Electronics introducing the AI-based ProVisual Engine for the first time in the Galaxy S24 series. The AI enhances digital zoom quality to optical zoom levels, analyzing captured photos and suggesting customized editing tools simultaneously. When the reporter edited a photo where tree shadows intersected with a face, the shadows disappeared seamlessly.
Another impressive feature is the ‘Instant Slow-Mo,’ where applying it to a video by touching the screen with a finger resulted in a slow-motion effect. When the reporter applied it to a video of a man skateboarding, the fast movements transformed into slow motion. This capability is achieved as AI generates additional frames between existing frames in the video, creating the slow-motion effect.
