Hyundai Motor Co.'s Kona subcompact SUV has topped 2 million global sales nearly eight years after its launch, driven by strong demand in overseas markets, the company said Tuesday. /Hyundai Motors Co.

Hyundai Motor Co. announced that sales of its Kona subcompact SUV have surpassed 2 million units worldwide, nearly eight years after its launch, with overseas sales accounting for nearly 90% of the total.

The South Korean automaker said that as of Dec. 2024, global sales of the Kona—including gasoline, hybrid, and electric models—had reached 2,001,320 units since its debut in June 2017.

Overseas markets made up 88.4% of sales, or about 1.77 million units. Europe was the largest market, with 664,162 units sold, followed by the United States with 512,020 units.

By powertrain, internal combustion engine models led with 1.36 million units sold, followed by 380,000 electric vehicles and 250,000 hybrids. Hyundai introduced the electric Kona Electric in 2018 and the hybrid variant in 2019 as part of its push toward electrification. In 2021, it rolled out the high-performance Kona N model.
