Summary
Chung Eui-sun is the Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, South Korea’s largest automaker. He is the only son of group honorary chairman Chung Mong-koo and grandson of Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung.
Chung graduated from Korea University with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1993 and joined Hyundai Precision and Industries (now Hyundai Mobis) in 1994.
From 2005 to 2009, he was the president of Kia Motors, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group. He managed to turn around the company’s poor sales performance during this time by revamping Kia’s design. In 2006 he hired Peter Schreyer, a German automobile designer widely known for his design contributions to the Audi TT, as chief design officer. Schreyer oversaw the complete restyling of Kia’s range until 2012. Chung is also credited with successfully launching Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis in 2010.
Chung became executive chair of Hyundai Motor Group in 2020. Under his leadership, the company is working on transforming the automobile manufacturer into an all-around ‘Smart Mobility Solutions Provider’. In line with this vision, Hyundai Motor Group plans on expanding into various fields including autonomous driving, electric cars, smart city planning, robotics, and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). American automobile magazine MotorTrend named Chung “Person of the Year” in January 2023 for “leading Hyundai Motor Group into a new age.”
Hyundai Motor Group is now the third largest automobile manufacturer in the world in terms of sales, trailing behind Toyota and Volkswagen.
