Summary
Park Too-pyung, the second-generation leader and first chairman of the Doosan Group, was born in October 1910 as the eldest son of Park Seung-jik. He studied at Dongdaemun Shim Sang Elementary School, Gyeongseong Middle School, and Gyeongseong High Commercial School. After working for five years at the Bank of Chosen, he joined his father’s business, Park Seung-jik Store, in 1936.
After the liberation of Korea, Park Too-pyung was appointed as the administrator of Showa Kirin Brewery Company, a company in which his father was a shareholder, and began producing alcoholic beverages. In 1946, he renamed the Park Seung-jik Store as the Doosan Mercantile Company, and in 1952, he inherited Dongyang Beer (predecessor of Oriental Brewery), the successor of Showa Kirin Brewery, launching the brand “OB.” The name OB, derived from Oriental Brewery, was used as the group’s name until 1978.
In 1960, Park Too-pyung founded Dongsan Togeon, entering the construction industry, and expanded the company’s scale by acquiring the Hapdong News Agency in 1966. He became the chairman of Oriental Brewery in 1969 and assumed the position of the first chairman of the group.
