Summary
Park Seung-jik, the founding chairman of Doosan, was born in 1864 in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. As the youngest son of Park Mun-hoe and Mrs. Kim, he entered the fabric market at 18, establishing Park Seung-jik Store in Jongno in 1896. The store specialized in selling high-quality fabrics, including imports and domestically produced textiles.
In 1905, Park played a role in founding the Gwangjang Stock Company, operating the modern permanent market known as Gwangjang Market. In 1906, he contributed to the establishment of the Hansung Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 1915, he founded “Bakgabun Bonpo” and produced the cosmetic “Bakgabun” until 1937.
In 1917, he established “Gongsin Sanghoe” in Dongdaemun Market, involved in the sale of grains and the beauty industry. The Park Seung-jik Store underwent reorganization into a joint-stock company in 1925. In 1933, he participated in founding the Showa Kirin Beer Company. In 1934, he served as the president of the Gyeongseong Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Park Seung-jik passed away in 1950 at the age of 86 in Dundeon-ri, Gwangju-gun, Gyeonggi Province.
