European cars accounted for an unprecedented 80 percent of the sales of imported vehicles in Korea in the first half of this year.
The Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association said Monday that 94,263 imported cars were newly registered from January to June, and 81 percent were European brands, up four percentage points on-year.
The main contributors are German brands. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi sold 60,733 cars in the first half of this year, accounting for 71 percent of imported car sales.
British brands Land Rover and Jaguar came a distant second with 5,665 vehicles or 11 percent.
Yoon Dae-sung at the association said, "Led by the popularity of German diesel models, foreign carmakers released around 70 new models in the first half."
