Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Kia’s EV6 broke into the top 10 best-selling electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States last year, showcasing the growing competition in the EV sector.
A recent report by market research firm S&P Global Mobility stated that in the U.S. automobile market last year, the Ioniq 5 and EV6 models each were registered with wholesale sales of 31,286 and 18,243 units.
These sales figures corresponded to market shares of 2.7% and 1.6% and ranked the Ioniq 5 and EV6 as the 6th and 10th best-selling models, respectively.
The two most popular electric vehicles registered in the U.S. are the Tesla. Model Y, which accounts for 385,593 units and a market share of 33.5%, and the Model 3, with 212,034 units, which has a market share of 18.5%. Together, these two models make up over 50% of the electric vehicle market.
Followed by these two, the Chevrolet Bolt has 62,775 units (5.5%), the Ford Mustang Mach-E has 38,660 units (3.4%), and the Volkswagen ID.4 has 36,961 units (3.2%). These models rank third to fifth, respectively.
The analysis also reveals that the top 10 models represent 75% of the total electric vehicle sales in the U.S., while the remaining 83 models compete for the remaining 25% of the market.
In the U.S. market last year, 11,926,128 light vehicles were registered. Light vehicles are automobiles with a payload of 6 tons or less. Gasoline vehicles had the highest market share (78.3%), followed by hybrid (10.4%), electric (8.5%), and diesel (2.8%) vehicles.
The Ford F-Series pickup truck was the top-selling vehicle across all fuel types with 676,989 units sold and a market share of 4.5%. The Chevrolet Silverado followed close behind with 542,940 units (3.6%).
Other top-selling vehicles included the Toyota RAV4, 435,730 units sold (2.8%), Ram, 403,033 units (2.7%), Tesla Model Y, 385,593 units (2.5%), Honda CR-V, 356,687 units (2.3%), GMC Sierra, 294,088 units (1.9%), and Toyota Camry, 288,831 units (1.9%). Four of these vehicles were full-size pickup trucks, and the only sedan was the Toyota Camry.
The hybrid car market, which has been gaining attention due to the recent slowdown in electric vehicle growth, showed that 6 of the top 10 models were from the Toyota and Honda brands, indicating a dominance by Japanese cars. The Honda CR-V became the best-selling hybrid in the US last year with 194,230 registrations, accounting for a market share of 13.6%.
