LG Electronics announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft at the LG World Premiere event on Jan. 6, held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, just ahead of CES 2025. The South Korean tech giant plans to roll out integrated AI services by combining data collected from products across its diverse product ecosystem, including homes, vehicles, and commercial spaces, with Microsoft’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The partnership will focus on developing AI agents capable of enhancing user experiences in various spaces, including homes, vehicles, hotels, and offices. LG Electronics has already incorporated Microsoft’s speech recognition and synthesis technology into its mobile AI home hub, Q9, enabling smoother customer interactions. This technology allows Q9 to recognize diverse accents, pronunciations, and colloquial expressions. The two companies plan to develop AI agents capable of understanding and interacting with users and anticipating their needs and preferences.

Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff highlighted plans for collaboration in AI data centers, a rapidly growing sector driven by the global AI boom. LG Electronics’ ultra-large-scale cooling technology, known as the ‘Chiller,’ and its AI data center solutions have emerged as critical components for maintaining data center performance and sustainability. The two companies will work on optimizing thermal management and chiller technologies for Microsoft’s next-generation AI data centers.

LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan presented the company’s AI vision in his keynote speech, describing it as a tool to deliver a “holistic experience that seamlessly connects products and services in daily life.” He identified three core pillars for achieving this vision: connected devices, capable AI agents, and integrated services.

Connected devices serve as key touchpoints for AI-driven user interactions. With hundreds of millions of smart products in use worldwide, LG continues to expand its ecosystem. Last year, the company acquired global smart home platform provider Athom and continues strengthening its connectivity with over 170 IoT device brands worldwide.

LG plans to further advance LG Furon, the brain behind LG AI Home. By combining generative AI powered by large language models (LLMs) with real-time spatial sensing and customer-specific lifestyle data, LG Furon offers adaptive, context-aware, and seamless control of devices and services.

LG Electronics also plans to boost its AI capabilities beyond consumer products into business-to-business (B2B) sectors. The company’s Smart Cottage, modular homes equipped with AI appliances and HVAC systems, offers a glimpse into the future of AI-powered living spaces. In the automotive sector, LG continues to integrate AI into software-defined vehicles (SDVs) to optimize vehicle performance, while its smart factory solutions leverage AI and robotics to enhance manufacturing efficiency. Its AI-powered thermal management systems and chiller technologies are set to optimize energy efficiency in AI data centers.
