Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Chung Eui-sun met Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, during a golf event in the United States.

According to AFP on Feb. 12 (local time), Trump Jr. participated in the pro-am tournament of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational, held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California. Among his playing partners were Chung’s wife, Jeong Ji-seon; Trump Jr.’s daughter, Kai Trump, who is a professional golfer; and Rory McIlroy, a top-ranked golfer.

Although Chung did not play in the round, he accompanied the group, moving between locations and engaging in conversation. Witnesses said he spoke extensively with Trump Jr. throughout the event.

Trump Jr. has emerged as a key figure in the Trump administration’s second term, which began last month. He played a pivotal role in selecting Vice President J.D. Vance, a close associate, and was a prominent figure during Trump’s presidential campaign.

For this reason, many political and business leaders around the world are seeking to build ties with the Trump administration through Trump Jr. Last month, Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida to meet with him.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group faces heightened uncertainty under Trump’s new administration. The president has signaled plans to roll back incentives for electric vehicles and impose high tariffs on cars and steel imports.

Against this backdrop, Chung’s meeting with Trump Jr. is seen as a strategic move to strengthen ties with the administration and navigate potential challenges in the U.S. market.
