Samsung Electronics has instructed employees in its semiconductor foundry division to use only the English term “foundry” in all company documents. Between late last year and early January, the company sent an email titled “Foundry business name usage guide” to executives and staff, saying that “the official name is ‘Foundry business,’ and the Korean term should no longer be used.”
Previously, Samsung used both Korean and English terms, but starting this year, only “foundry” will be allowed in internal reports and external communications. The company has also updated its semiconductor division’s website, replacing all Korean references with the English term.
Samsung made this change to avoid confusion with global clients, as the Korean pronunciation of “foundry” may sound like it starts with a “p” instead of an “f.”
