Miss Korea 1989 Oh Hyun-kyung is in the news again after announcing in the August edition of Women Joongang that she and her husband, who is in jail, agreed to divorce in late June.
After winning the title, Oh made the transition into the entertainment world, but in 1999 an old videotape of her and an ex-boyfriend having sex found its way onto the Internet, and the starlet found herself in the midst of a huge scandal.
Oh escaped to the U.S., where she struggled economically, moving from motel to motel. In 2001 she returned to Korea and later found herself in the public eye once again after a hush-hush wedding in Sept. 2002 to Kemongsa president Hong Seung-pyo, who was then under investigation for embezzlement. In 2003 she gave birth to a baby girl and since then gave the appearance of having settled down to a normal life.
But in October 2004, her husband was taken into custody for stealing W4 billion of company money (US$1=W950). "I was preparing for a celebration of our daughter's first birthday, when like thunder on a clear day, I heard the news that my husband had been taken into custody," Oh told Women Joongang.
The actress visited Hong every day, taking in items he needed. But she confided that she became aware of a shocking truth. "Without my knowledge, he used my parents' house to secure a loan, and he used my name to carry out stock transactions," she told the monthly.
To make matters worse, she also learned that her husband had been married twice before, and had two children. After fretting about what would be best for her daughter, she realized that the relationship was unrecoverable and brought up the idea of divorce. Her husband agreed.
It seems the turbulences in the former beauty queen's life are not yet over.
