Mao Asada

Japanese figure skating star Mao Asada has decided to postpone her retirement, she told reporters Monday.

She said she missed competing badly while taking a rest for the whole of 2014 and wanted to feel the sense of achievement again.

But Asada was noncommittal when asked whether she will take part in the Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018, saying she would like to focus on her own short-term goals for the time being. If she can get back to form she may give it a thought, she added.

Asada was the runner-up after Kim Yu-na at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 and came sixth in Sochi last year. After her third career win in last year's world championships, she took a break to think about her future.

She recently reunited with her ex-coach Nobuo Sato.
