Gymnast Yang Hak-seon has withdrawn from the Summer Universiade in Gwangju due to injury.
Yang had to pull out of the men's team event on Saturday, due to a pain in his thigh. Yang tore the hamstring three weeks before the opening of the Universiade.
After undergoing an MRI scan at Chonnam National University Hospital on Sunday, Yang was advised to take three weeks of treatment. Taking into account the time needed for rehabilitation, he will likely be out of competition for at least two months.
Supported by crutches, Yang said, "I will work hard to be back in good form at the Olympics next year in Rio de Janeiro."
Yang injured his right hamstring in September, just before the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. The injury kept him from performing at his best, and he finished second in the vault.
A month later at the 2014 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Nanning, China, he failed to defend his title, falling short of a third consecutive victory. Yang had been hoping for a hometown redemption at the Gwangju Universiade -- only to be let down by injury yet again.
Despite losing Yang, the Korean men's gymnastics team performed consistently on the second day of the event on Sunday, winning the silver medal with 258.550 points, behind Japan, which earned 266.000 points.
