Im Ae-ji

Boxer Im Ae-ji has become the first Korean woman ever to qualify for the Olympics, securing a berth at this summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Im beat Sakshi Chaudhary of India in a unanimous 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals of the women's 57-kg featherweight category at the Asia-Oceania Olympic boxing qualifiers in Amman, Jordan on Monday.

The top four boxers in the event earn Olympic berths in the category.

By advancing to the semifinals, Im is assured of a place in Tokyo regardless of the result of the remaining bouts.

In her first international appearance, Im won the Women's Youth World Championships in November 2017, defeating Vittoria De Carlo of Italy in a 4-1 decision. It was Korea's first-ever gold medal at an international women's boxing event.

She competed in the 57-kg category at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia but failed to win a medal, losing in the quarterfinals.

Korea has never made an Olympic appearance in women's boxing, which was officially adopted as a competitive event at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

A total of 13 Korean boxers -- eight men and five women -- are participating in the qualifiers in Jordan, which end on Wednesday. Korea aims to secure tickets to Tokyo in four categories for men and two for women.
