Korea was eliminated from the men's football at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo on Saturday after losing 6-3 to Mexico in the quarterfinals.
It was the most goals ever conceded by Korea in an Olympic match since an age limit was introduced to the football competition at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
Korea got off to a shaky start in the match in Yokohama, allowing a goal after just 12 minutes. Lee Dong-gyeong scored a fantastic equalizer eight minutes later, but Mexico quickly increased the lead with goals in the 30th and the 39th minute, the latter being a penalty.
Lee halved the gap in the 51st minute to make it 3-2, but Mexico scored three more goals in succession in the 54th, 63rd and 84th minutes. Hwang Ui-jo scored a consolation goal in injury time in the second half, but it did not have any impact on the result.
Five out of the six goals conceded by the Korean team were due to questionable defense in the wing positions.
Korea had aimed to surpass its bronze medal finish in London in 2012.
