Im Sung-jae has become the only Korean to qualify for the PGA Tour's season finale. He will compete at the Tour Championship, the final event of the FedEx Cup playoffs, at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta for three days starting Thursday.
The top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings qualify for the tournament. FedEx Cup points are accumulated throughout the season.
Im has qualified for three consecutive Tour Championships since his rookie year in 2019, becoming the first Korean to achieve the feat.
The winner will receive US$15 million in prize money, and the runner-up $5 million. Even the last place finisher is rewarded with $395,000.
Im said, "The winner's prize money is so huge that I cannot imagine how I would feel if I won it."
He failed to win a medal at the recent Summer Olympics in Tokyo. "I performed poorly [at the Olympics] as I tried too hard to play well. I realized once again that a golfer must focus on the shot in hand, rather than the result," Im said.
