Korean female golfers playing on the LPGA Tour this season have secured only four wins so far. Their winless streak at major LPGA tournaments has now reached 10, with not a single victory in the last three months.
It is the first time in eight years that Korean golfers have gone for 10 consecutive tournaments without a win on the tour, after suffering a winless streak for 17 tournaments from October 2013 to June 2014. Also, if Koreans miss major awards such as the Rolex Player of the Year, Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year and Vare Trophy, it would be the first time in eight years.
With six LPGA tournaments left this season, Korean golfers are expected to end the season with just four wins, which would be the country's second-worst record following 2011's three wins. In 2015, 2017 and 2019, Koreans claimed as many as 15 victories every season. They won seven in both 2020 and 2021, a period when many tournaments were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The U.S. has collected seven wins at 26 events this season. Australia, Canada, Japan, Thailand and South Africa have each claimed two wins, while Denmark, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, and Sweden have each collected one victory.
The four wins Koreans earned this season went to Ko Jin-young (the HSBC Women's World Championship in March), Kim Hyo-joo (the Lotte Championship in April), Ji Eun-hee (the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play in May) and Chun In-gee (the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in June).
But both Ko and Chun are currently taking a break due to injuries.
Ko won't be able to defend her title at the Volunteers of America Classic scheduled for this week in Texas, as she decided to skip the tournament due to a wrist injury. She is now No. 1 in the world rankings with 8.07 points, but closely followed by Nelly Korda of the U.S. (7.46), Atthaya Thitikul of Thailand (7.40) and Korean-Australian Lee Min-jee (7.24).
