Actress Mun Ka-young has expressed relief that her decision to take on a role in cable channel JTBC's "Understanding of Love," which ended last week, turned out to be the right one.

Taking the role was a challenge to her because she had never played such a character, but the positive reaction from viewers justified her decision.

"I was eager to play a role that is different from what I'd done before, and I wanted to prove that I have many sides I have not yet shown. I'm happy that reviews for the new role have been favorable," she said in a recent media interview.

Based on the novel of the same title, "Understanding of Love" is a melodrama about people with different interests who encounter each other and learn the meaning of true love.

Mun plays a bank teller from a deprived background who strives to achieve the seemingly unachievable to make her life better. The character is totally different from the sophisticated, charming women she has usually played in previous projects.

Mun said, "This series showed me the attractions of melodrama as a genre. My interaction with co-star Yoo Yeon-seok was an important factor in the drama, and I'm grateful that we could create good chemistry."

"To be honest, I didn't think the series would appeal to many people. But thankfully many people have said they enjoyed it. Their support and praise made me feel that I was right in deciding to join the project."
