Hollywood actor Charles Melton honored his Korean immigrant mother at the 29th Critics’ Choice Awards (CCA) event in Santa Monica last Jan.
Melton, who received the Best Supporting Actor award for his work in “May December,” became emotional while thanking his mother during his acceptance speech.
“I once felt lost, being the child of an immigrant mother and a soldier father. But now, I am proud of my Korean American heritage,” said a tearful Melton, addressing his mother in Korean. “Umma. My spirit.”
Melton’s recognition at CCA follows the critical acclaim he received for his acting in the drama film, where he plays a 36-year-old Korean man married to an older woman, played by Julianne Moore. Melton took home more than 20 accolades throughout this year’s awards season.
Beyond showing a deep affection for his mother, Melton has a passion for Korean culture. In a recent interview with The New York Times, he demonstrated how to make Kimchi and even gifted it to a visiting reporter. “This Kimchi is made with my mom’s 60-year-old recipe,” Melton said, known for sharing homemade Kimchi with close actors and friends.
On March 17, the Korean American actor visited South Korea with his mother for the premiere of “May December,” released in Korea on March. 13
“It is surreal watching my movie with my family,” Melton remarked, having gained 18 kg for his role as 36-year-old father Joe.
Recently, rumors surfaced that Melton has been cast along with Anne Hathaway for the second season of the hit Netflix drama “Beef.” Responding to the rumor, Melton hinted, “Perhaps there will be some good news soon. I want to meet Korean fans again through my movie.”
