NewJeans, a leading K-pop girl group, will be the first to perform a special stage at Gyeongbokgung Palace’s Geunjeongjeon Hall.

Organized by the Cultural Heritage Administration and hosted by the Korea Heritage Agency and KBS, ‘2024 Korea On Stage - New Generation’ (Korea On Stage) will be held on May. 21 on a special stage in front of Heungnyemun Gate at Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Geunjeongjeon, a historically significant state heritage site designated as South Korea’s national treasure, was a building used for major state ceremonies during the Joseon Dynasty. Public performances in this area have been rare, even after Gyeongbokgung Palace opened to the public in 1954. The Cultural Heritage Administration specially opened Geunjeongjeon for NewJeans, a leading K-pop group, attracting significant attention.

NewJeans will be performing a special version of ‘Cool With You’ on stage, making history as the first K-pop girl group to perform at Geunjeongjeon.

They will be wearing specially designed Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) for the event, including reinterpreted traditional clothing such as jeogori (a traditional Korean garment) and chima (skirt), as well as Beoseon-style (Korean traditional footwear) shoes and goddess-like hair accessories, showcasing the beauty of Korean aesthetics.

The performance will also feature a spectacular night-time display at Geunjeongjeon, highlighting the grandeur of the cultural heritage and the prominence of K-pop.

NewJeans expressed their excitement, stating that it is a great honor to perform at Geunjeongjeon, a precious heritage site of S. Korea, and it will be a memory they will cherish for a long time. They also added that they hope this opportunity will encourage many people to take an interest in South Korea’s cultural heritage.

An official from KBS stated, “This special stage by NewJeans at Geunjeongjeon is not only an opportunity to introduce the beauty and value of our cultural heritage newly but also to promote Geunjeongjeon as a symbol of Korean culture to the world.”

The special stage performance by NewJeans at Geunjeongjeon will air on ‘Korea On Stage’ on KBS 2TV at 11:25 PM on May. 21 and will be broadcast to 142 countries via KBS World.
