The Mexican girl group “Jeans,” which debuted in the 1990s, is said to have inspired the visual conceptions and choreography of the K-pop girl group NewJeans, which was created by ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin. The accusations first arose in January of last year in local Mexican media, and they have since reappeared in online forums.
On Jan. 7. last year, the Mexican regional daily newspaper El Siglo wrote, “Claims are emerging online that South Korea’s NewJeans was inspired by the 90s Mexican girl group Jeans,” pointing out the similarities between the two groups. A Facebook user made the assertion that NewJeans’ name, concepts for their music videos and promotional images, as well as their clothes, hairstyles, and other visual elements, were strikingly identical to Jeans’
The Facebook user commented that “NewJeans seems to be very inspired by Jeans’, both conceptually and musically,” adding, “This could be a coincidence since NewJeans is characterized by reflecting the culture of the 90s and early 2000s (Y2K).”
Since then, numerous images and videos comparing NewJeans and Jeans have been shared online. First, it was claimed that the several logo versions and the logos that emphasized the capital “J” in the group names were comparable.
The “head sweep” choreography motion from NewJeans’ hit song “Attention” was specifically compared to previous Jeans videos, while the choreography formation from “OMG,” wherein NewJeans members play a train while putting their hands on each other’s shoulders, was compared to one of Jeans’ choreography. It was also mentioned that the sequence in the “Ditto” music video where one member uses a camera to record the other members was reminiscent of Jeans’ 2015 song “Dime que me amas.”
Meanwhile, it has been suggested that NewJeans and Jeans share stylistic and outfit parallels, given that the group was created with the early 2000s Y2K sentiment in mind,
