Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where South Korean player Lee Kang-in plays, unveiled a special jersey featuring Hangul, the Korean alphabet, to mark Korea’s 578th Hangul Day. Hangul Day celebrates the creation of the Korean writing system, which was invented in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great to promote literacy among the common people.
On Oct. 9th, PSG posted on social media, “To commemorate Korea’s Hangul Day, we are launching a limited-edition kit featuring Hangul,” sharing an image of Lee Kang-in holding the new jersey.
PSG has previously released jerseys with Hangul after signing Lee Kang-in in July last year. The team even wore these special jerseys during matches at the end of last year and in March. This year’s design, however, stands out as a tribute to Hangul Day with unique elements.
The names of Lee Kang-in and his teammates, including Vitinha and Dembélé, are written in Hangul on the jerseys. The jersey numbers are marked with patterns inspired by “Hunminjeongeum,” the original document that outlined the creation of Hangul. Additionally, the numbers incorporate a tiger motif, symbolizing Korea.
PSG shared a message in another post, expressing their excitement about celebrating the 578th Hangul Day on Oct. 9, 2024, with their fans. Lee Kang-in appeared in a video created by the club, where he conveyed his wishes for everyone to have a joyful and meaningful day.
Tottenham Hotspur, where South Korean star Son Heung-min plays, also joined the celebration.
Despite Son’s absence due to injury, Tottenham Hotspur acknowledged Hangul Day, expressing their pride in the occasion and their happiness to connect with fans through the Korean language.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, the German club where defender Kim Min-jae plays, shared a video of Leroy Sané and Aleksandar Pavlović practicing simple Korean phrases, such as ‘gana-da’ and ‘yeoreobun’ (everyone), to celebrate the day.
