The next chapter of the series was unveiled at the Oct. 21 press conference for “Hellbound” Season 2. Cast members Kim Hyun-joo, Kim Sung-cheol, Kim Shin-rok, Lim Seong-jae, Moon So-ri, and Moon Geun-young attended the event, alongside director Yeon Sang-ho and writer Choi Gyu-seok, who shared insights into the upcoming season.
In the new season, lawyer Min Hye-jin (Kim Hyun-joo) of Sodo, the New Truth, and the Arrowheads become entwined with the resurrected New Truth chairman, Jung Jin-su (Kim Sung-cheol), and Park Jung-ja (Kim Shin-rok). As condemnations to hell continue to rise, the world plunges deeper into chaos.
“Hellbound” Season 2 explores a world unraveling under the relentless onslaught of damnation decrees. Min Hye-jin, the New Truth, and the Arrowhead faction become deeply involved in the unfolding mystery surrounding the resurrection of Chairman Jung Jin-su and Park Jung-ja. Director Yeon Sang-ho and writer Choi Gyu-seok, who captivated audiences with their dystopian vision in Season 1, promise a more expansive and intense narrative in this new installment.
Director Yeon Sang-ho explained that Season 2 “explores the complex dynamics between the New Truth, the Sodo, and the Arrowheads, as ‘Jung Jin-su’ and ‘Park Jung-ja’ are resurrected amid the chaos brought on by ongoing decrees and executions condemning people to hell.” He added, “This season focuses on how individuals face the new phenomenon of resurrection, and how their differing motivations lead to conflict as they attempt to establish order amidst confusion.”
A particularly notable change in the upcoming season is the casting of Kim Sung-cheol, who takes over the role of Jung Jin-su, previously portrayed by Yoo Ah-in. Director Yeon remarked, “Kim Sung-cheol’s portrayal closely aligns with the essence of Jung Jin-su from the original cartoon. I sensed a unique energy in him that convinced me he could embody the character’s complexity.” He further explained, “With Kim’s extensive experience in musicals, where ‘double casting’ is common, I felt he was well-suited to take on a role previously played by another actor.”
Moon Geun-young, who plays a key figure in the Arrowheads, shared, “This is my boldest transformation yet, and I believe viewers will be excited for Season 2.” Lim Seong-jae expressed his gratitude, stating, “As a fan of Season 1, it’s an honor to take on a role I had only imagined playing.” Moon So-ri added, “The expanded world and deeper themes give Season 2 even more impact than the first. I hope my character leaves a lasting impression, especially heading into Season 3.”
“Hellbound” Season 2, returning three years after its globally successful first season—which ranked in the top 10 in 93 countries with its supernatural premise of damnation—will be released on Netflix on Oct. 25.
