A report from a British daily newspaper suggests that Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League (EPL) intends to trigger a one-year contract extension for captain Son Heung-Min rather than negotiating a new deal, as his current contract expires this season. The Telegraph reported on Nov. 4, “In July 2021, Tottenham signed Son to a four-year contract, securing his services through the 2024-25 season. The club retains an exclusive option to extend the deal by an additional year, which only requires notifying Son of their decision—something they now appear set to do.”

Son joined Tottenham in August 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen for 30 million euros ($32.24 million). Initially signing a five-year deal, he extended his contract in July 2018 to run through 2023. In July 2021, another extension was agreed, binding him to the club until next summer. Should Tottenham exercise the one-year extension option, Son would remain with the club through the 2025-26 season before potentially becoming a free agent. Given Son’s age—he will be 32 next season—and a substantial weekly wage of £190,000 ($244,000), Tottenham seems to be taking a pragmatic stance, opting for the flexibility of a short-term extension over a long-term commitment.

In his ten seasons with Tottenham, Son has netted 123 goals, ranking him 19th on the EPL’s all-time scoring chart and second in Tottenham’s records behind Harry Kane, who scored 213 goals before his transfer to FC Bayern Munich. Son has captained the team since last season, yet the pursuit of a major trophy has eluded him. When asked about his contract status before a UEFA Champions League match in September, Son responded cautiously, saying, “I don’t know what the future holds, but I’ll give my all for this team until my contract ends.”
