The film, which garnered over 13 million moviegoers, is set around the historical events of the December 12, 1979, military coup that broke out in Seoul.
Hwang received his third Best Actor award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, following his wins in 2005 for “You’re My Sunshine” and “New World” (2013).

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Jung Hae-in for his role in “I, the Executioner,” while Lee Sang-hee claimed the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in “My Name is Loh Kiwan.” Actor Noh Sang-hyun was awarded Best New Actor for his role in “Love in the Big City.” Best New Actress award went to Park Ju-hyun for “Drive.” Director Cho Hyun-chul won the Best New Director award for his film “The Dream Songs.”
Actor Jung Woo-sung, who was at the center of controversy following the revelation that he had fathered a child out of wedlock, made an appearance at the awards to present the Most Popular Film award for “12.12: The Day.”
“I stand here with the hope that my personal issues do not cast a shadow over this film and all those who worked on it,” he said in his speech. “To everyone who has shown me love and support, I deeply apologize for causing disappointment and concern,” he added.
“I will accept and carry all criticism, and I will fulfill my responsibilities as a father to my son.”
