The newly released South Korean film Harbin has drawn more than 3 million moviegoers within nine days of its release.
According to distributor CJ ENM’s tally, released Jan. 1 through the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticket sales network, the film, directed by Woo Min-ho and produced by Hive Media Corp., reached a cumulative audience of over 3 million.
Harbin, which opened on Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, surpassed the 1 million mark on its second day in theaters and hit 2 million by its fifth day. By its ninth day, it had crossed 3 million.
This pace exceeds the record set by 12.12: The Day, a box office smash that reached the same milestone on its tenth day. Both films were produced by Hive Media Corp., prompting comparisons between the two. If 2023 was the year of 12.12: The Day, many observers note Harbin is charting a similar course for 2025. The film’s popularity continues to soar, holding its position as the top-ranked movie in advance ticket sales for 18 straight days.
To mark the milestone, a special poster was unveiled featuring the film’s ensemble cast. It highlights the powerful performances of Hyun Bin as An Jung-geun, Park Jeong-min as Woo Deok-soon, Jo Woo-jin as Kim Sang-hyun, Jeon Yeo-bin as Ms. Gong, Park Hoon as Tatsuo Mori, Yoo Jae-myung as Choi Jae-hyung, Lee Dong-wook as Lee Chang-seop, and Lily Franky as Ito Hirobumi.
Set in 1909, Harbin delves into the intense pursuit and gripping tension between individuals converging in Harbin, China, each with their own purpose. The film portrays their intersecting fates and unwavering resolve against a historical backdrop.
