Netflix has announced that the highly anticipated third season of the hit drama Squid Game will premiere on June 27.
The announcement, made on Jan. 30 (local time), comes just six months after the release of Season 2 in December.
The first season of Squid Game debuted in September 2021, with a three-year gap before Season 2. Season 3, consisting of seven episodes, was filmed back-to-back with Season 2.
Netflix confirmed that the third season will be the series’ “final season,” releasing promotional stills hinting at the storyline. The images suggest the next steps for Squid Game protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the masked Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), and other characters caught in fierce competition.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series creator and director, expressed his excitement about the upcoming release. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the seeds planted for Squid Game grow and bear fruit. We’ve poured our efforts into delivering another thrilling story,” Hwang said.
In its Jan. 21 quarterly earnings report, Netflix highlighted the success of Season 2, calling it “one of the most-watched original series seasons.” The company reported 165.7 million views in the fourth quarter of last year.
