South Korean entertainment agency ADOR has filed a court injunction seeking to ban all musical activities of girl group NJZ. The group, formerly known as NewJeans, is currently in a legal dispute with ADOR over its exclusive contract and management rights.
NJZ revealed the move on March 6 via social media, saying ADOR had broadened its original injunction request, which was initially intended to secure its status as the group’s management agency and block NJZ from signing independent advertising deals.
The agency is now asking the court to prohibit the group from engaging in any musical activities, including songwriting, composing, performing, and singing, as well as all related activities, the group said.
NJZ argued that ADOR initially framed the issue as being about advertisements, saying the agency claimed its actions were meant to prevent confusion among fans and advertisers. However, the group contended that ADOR was actually asking the court to ban all of their entertainment activities.
They criticized the move as an attempt to violate their right to work, emphasizing that music was the core of NJZ’s identity. They asserted that restricting their musical activities was tantamount to denying their very existence.
ADOR defended its actions, saying it had no choice but to expand its injunction request after NJZ announced new songs and major overseas performances while the initial case was still pending.
An official from the agency said the move was not intended to restrict NJZ’s activities but to ensure they continue their career while honoring their contract with ADOR. The agency also denied allegations that it had pressured concert organizers or taken retaliatory action against the group.
The first court hearing for the injunction is scheduled on Mar. 7 at the Seoul Central District Court.
“We will clarify any misunderstandings in court and seek a ruling that confirms ADOR’s rightful position as NJZ’s management agency, which so many people are waiting for,” the agency said.
