Jungkook of K-pop group BTS had his shares stolen in a hacking incident after he enlisted in the military last year, according to sources on March 22.
Jungkook’s 33,000 shares in HYBE, the entertainment company behind BTS, were stolen from him in January last year. Based on HYBE’s stock price at the time, the stolen shares were worth roughly 8.4 billion won ($6 million).
The hacker opened an unauthorized account in Jungkook’s name, transferred Jungkook’s 33,000 HYBE shares to the new account, and sold the remaining 500 shares to a third-party investor.
Jungkook’s agency, Big Hit Music, detected the suspicious activity and took emergency measures to freeze the accounts and halt payments, reportedly preventing any actual financial loss. The hacker has yet to be identified.
Jungkook enlisted in December 2023 and is currently serving in the South Korean Army. He is expected to be discharged on June 11 this year.
