Exciting news is on the horizon for South Korea’s railway system: This May marks the debut of the innovative KTX Cheong-ryong, a brand-new class of bullet train showcasing state-of-the-art domestic technology. Setting itself apart from its predecessor, the KTX-Sancheon, the KTX Cheong-ryong introduces a fresh approach to power design.
The key difference lies in its power distribution: While the KTX-Sancheon features power units solely at the front and rear cars, the KTX Cheong-ryong integrates power units beneath each car. This arrangement promises improved traction and acceleration capabilities, enhancing the overall travel experience.
With a top speed of 320 km/h, the KTX Cheong-ryong covers a distance at 300 km/h in just 212 seconds — over 100 seconds quicker than the KTX-Sancheon. This adaptation is deemed suitable for South Korea’s shorter inter-station distances by experts.
Operating on electricity, the KTX Cheong-ryong relies on electric traction motors. Unlike its predecessor’s eight 1,100 kW motors, the KTX Cheong-ryong boasts 24 units of 380 kW motors, delivering a total output of 9,120 kW for enhanced speed.
Despite the increase in power units, the KTX Cheong-ryong manages to shed approximately 2 tons compared to the KTX-Sancheon. It features eight passenger-accessible cars, a slight reduction from the KTX-Sancheon’s ten.
Yet, seating remains ample. While both trains have eight passenger cars, the KTX Cheong-ryong offers 136 more seats than the KTX-Sancheon. This is attributed to its longer car length and wider width, ensuring passenger comfort.
Notably, despite the presence of power units underfoot, the KTX Cheong-ryong maintains minimal noise and vibration levels. This is achieved through thoughtful design elements such as rubber panels and sound-absorbing materials, enhancing passenger comfort.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, alongside the Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail), is gearing up to introduce the KTX Cheong-ryong in May. With six daily services — four on the Gyeongbu Line and two on the Honam Line — this new addition promises to elevate high-speed rail travel in South Korea, offering passengers an enhanced and efficient commuting experience.
