The Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has partnered with Naver and Intel to create the Naver-Intel-KAIST Artificial Intelligence (AI) Joint Research Center. The center will focus on developing advanced open-source software for AI semiconductors and related technologies. It aims to launch full-scale research by July.

KAIST is a well-known research-oriented science and engineering institution and one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea. Naver, on the other hand, is the largest portal in S. Korea and is often referred to as the Korean version of Google. Together, the three organizations aim to build an ecosystem for new AI semiconductors.

KAIST announced on Apr. 30 that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Naver Cloud for the establishment and operation of the ‘Naver-Intel-KAIST AI Joint Research Center (NIK AI Research Center).’

The MOU aims to develop advanced open-source software that can enhance the performance and optimize the operation of AI semiconductors, AI servers, clouds, and data centers. As a result of this agreement, KAIST and Naver Cloud plan to establish an AI joint research center at KAIST in the first half of this year, and commence full-scale research in July.

Professor Kim Jung-ho, a world-renowned scholar in AI semiconductor design and AI application design (AI-X) from KAIST’s Department of Electronics Engineering, will co-direct the center along with Lee Dong-soo, an expert in AI semiconductor design and AI software from Naver Cloud.

The joint research center will also have two deputy directors: Professor Sung Min-hyuk from KAIST’s School of Computing and Kwon Se-jung, a leader at Naver Cloud.
