South Korea’s position in AI innovation significantly lags behind that of both the U.S. and China, according to the ‘2023 Global Artificial Intelligence Innovation Index’ released by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) and Peking University. The report revealed that South Korea’s AI innovation score stood at 33.11 points last year. This index assesses the innovation levels of 46 countries based on five criteria, including AI-related research and development (R&D), industrial application, and international cooperation. South Korea ranked 6th overall.

The top countries were the U.S. with 74.71 points, China with 52.69 points, the UK with 37.93 points, Japan with 34.42 points, and Singapore with 33.84 points. Over the past four years, the U.S. and China have consistently held the 1st and 2nd positions, respectively. The ISTIC noted that “of the 387 major machine learning models introduced globally between 2019 and 2023, 262 were developed in the U.S. and 68 in China.”
