Actor Yoo Ah-in faces new charges of sexually assaulting a sleeping man, adding to his ongoing legal troubles involving habitual drug use, as announced by the Seoul Yongsan Police Station on July. 25.
You is accused of assaulting a man in his 30s, referred to as A, while he was sleeping at an officetel (dual-purpose buildings used for commercial and residential purposes) in Yongsan-gu in July. 14. Under current law, same-sex sexual assault is treated as sexual assault.
A was allegedly asleep at the apartment from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the incident and only realized he had been sexually assaulted after waking up. He filed a complaint with the police the next day.
The officetel where the incident occurred belongs to a third party; neither Yoo nor A and the other men were present at the scene. The police are also investigating the possibility that Yoo, who is already on trial for habitual drug use, committed the crime while under the influence of drugs.
Yoo is currently on trial for using propofol 181 times between Sept. 2020 and Mar. 2022 and illegally purchasing sleeping pills under someone else’s name from May. 2021 to Aug. 2022.
On July. 24, the prosecution requested a four-year prison sentence, a fine of 2 million won, and a forfeiture of approximately 1.5 million won. During the final argument, Yoo’s side asked for leniency, stating that he suffers from depression, anxiety disorder, and insomnia, and had been advised by a psychiatrist to be hospitalized and use sedative anesthetics.
Meanwhile, regarding the sexual assault allegations, Yoo’s legal representatives stated, “The allegations against Yoo Ah-in are not true,” and asked that “unnecessary speculation about his private life be avoided.”
