North Korean propaganda leaflets, carried by balloons, landed in and around the presidential office in Yongsan, Seoul, on the morning of Oct. 24.
The Presidential Security Service explained that early in the morning, they identified scattered debris from a North Korean balloon that had burst in midair over the Yongsan area. Following a safety inspection, it was confirmed that the debris posed no risk or contamination, and the materials were collected. They also noted that they are continuing to monitor the situation in cooperation with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Earlier, the Joint Chiefs of Staff reported at around 2:30 a.m. that an object, believed to be a balloon from North Korea, was spotted floating across the border. This marks the second time items from a North Korean balloon have landed in the presidential compound, with the first incident occurring on Jul. 24. The materials dropped in July were mainly paper and plastic waste.
This time, however, the balloon carried propaganda leaflets mocking President Yoon Suk-yeol and First Lady Kim Keon-hee. The small leaflets, roughly the size of a hand, featured photos of the president and his wife, with messages ridiculing them. Some of the content included lines like, “It’s a relief that the Yoon couple has no children,” and “S. Korea is now Keon-hee’s kingdom,” taking aim at the presidential couple with sarcastic remarks.
