A recent poll conducted over the Lunar New Year holiday found that 58–60% of South Koreans believe the Constitutional Court should approve President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment. About 50% also supported a change in government. However, support for the Democratic Party (DP) ranged from 37% to 44%, and its leader Lee Jae-myung was preferred by 35% to 36% of respondents as the next presidential candidate.
Polling experts noted, “Even among those who support Yoon’s impeachment and want a change in government, many are uncertain about the Democratic Party and Lee Jae-myung as alternatives.”
A survey commissioned by KBS and conducted by Hankook Research from Jan. 24 to 26 found that 60% of respondents believed the Constitutional Court should approve President Yoon’s impeachment, while 36% opposed it. Additionally, 50% supported backing an opposition candidate for a change in government, compared to 39% who favored supporting a ruling party candidate for maintaining the current administration. Support for impeachment exceeded opposition by 24 percentage points, and support for government change was 11 points higher than support for continuity.
However, support for the main opposition DP and its leader Lee Jae-myung was relatively weak. The party led with 37% against the ruling People Power Party’s 35%, albeit within the margin of error. While Lee was the top choice for the next president with 35% support, this figure was lower than his party’s overall approval rating.
