North Korea tests larger recon drone as Russia defense ties deepen

North Korea appears to be testing a larger version of its high-altitude reconnaissance drone, modeled after the U.S. RQ-4 Global Hawk, according to satellite imagery analyzed by NK Pro and Radio Free Asia. The new UAV, spotted at Panghyon Airbase, resembles the previously unveiled Saetbyul-4 but has an extended wingspan of 35 to 40 meters, aligning with the U.S. transition from the RQ-4A to the RQ-4B. Satellite images also showed North Korea constructing seven hangars at the airbase, suggesting preparations for the drone’s deployment. Meanwhile, Japan’s NHK reported that Pyongyang and Moscow have agreed to jointly develop and produce various UAVs using Russian technology, with North Korea expected to begin mass production this year.

South Korea auto parts exports soar to record $8.22B, face US tariff risk

South Korea’s auto parts exports to the United States hit a record $8.22 billion in 2024, accounting for 36.5% of the country’s total $22.54 billion in auto parts exports, according to the Korea Auto Industries Coop. Association. However, industry experts warn that the Trump administration’s proposed 25% tariff on imported vehicles could undermine South Korea’s competitiveness, prompting U.S. automakers to boost local production and driving up investment costs for Korean suppliers. Some analysts, though, believe the ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute could favor South Korean parts as an alternative to Chinese products.
