South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party (DPK) said on March 20 it would move to impeach acting President Choi Sang-mok for failing to appoint Ma Eun-hyuk as a Constitutional Court justice.

DPK floor leader Park Chan-dae told reporters after a meeting with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik that the party viewed Choi’s actions as unconstitutional and would proceed with impeachment.

“We will not overlook acting President Choi’s unconstitutional actions and will initiate impeachment proceedings,” Park said.

He added that discussions on the timing were ongoing but noted that Speaker Woo also supported the move.

The decision follows a DPK general meeting on March 19, where lawmakers debated Choi’s impeachment and ultimately delegated the final decision to party leadership.
