South Korea will hold a snap presidential election on June 3 following the impeachment and removal of President Yoon Suk-yeol, a government official said on April 7.

The government plans to formally confirm and announce the election date during a regular Cabinet meeting scheduled for April 8, the official added.

The vote was triggered after the Constitutional Court upheld Yoon’s impeachment over his alleged role in inciting insurrection, making him the first South Korean president to be removed from office since Park Geun-hye in 2017.

Under South Korean law, a presidential election must be held within 60 days of a president’s removal from office.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo is serving as acting president until a new leader is elected and sworn in.

The opposition Democratic Party (DPK) is expected to field its leader, Lee Jae-myung, as its candidate, while the ruling People Power Party (PPP) has yet to nominate a successor amid internal turmoil following Yoon’s ouster.
