North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's sister Yo-jong is apparently pregnant with her second child, according to sources on Tuesday.
The sources said Kim Yo-jong told government officials of her condition when she was here for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics earlier this month, but officially the government says it has no knowledge of this.
Gimlet-eyed observers spotted Kim Yo-jong's slightly rounded belly during her three-day visit and noted that she sat down cautiously.
One North Korean defector said, "It seems the reason Kim Jong-un's household steward Kim Chang-son accompanied the North Korean delegation was because Yo-jong is pregnant and required special care."
According to the National Intelligence Service, Kim Yo-jong had her first child around May 2015.
But who is her husband? There were rumors at one point that she is married to the son of her brother's second-in-command Choe Ryong-hae or to a classmate from Kim Il-sung University.
The North Korea Strategic Information Service Center said recently that the North Korean leader chose a man from an ordinary background for his sister to prevent the emergence of another eminence grise like his uncle Jang Song-taek, who was brutally executed on corruption charges.
That Kim sent his sister to South Korea even though she is pregnant indicates how much store he sets by efforts to cozy up to the South and cushion international sanctions.
