한 남자가 멋진 신형 승용차를 샀다(buy a nice brand new car). 매일 윤이 나도록 닦았다(polish it every day).
어느 화창한 오후(one sunny afternoon), 그날도 열심히 광택을 내고 있는데, 네 살짜리 딸이 그에게 뛰어왔다(run towards him). 그런데 잠깐 한눈을 파는 사이에(in the blink of an eye) 땅에서 작은 돌멩이를 집어들고는(pick up a small stone from the ground) 차 옆을 긁어대고(scratch the side of the car) 있는 것이 아닌가.
남자는 순간적으로 화가 나서(in a fit of rage) 신경질적으로 어린 딸의 손을 잡아챘다(snatch her hand). 자신도 모르는 사이에 미친 듯이 소리를 질렀다(unknowingly yell his head off).
어린 딸은 공포감에 싸여 바들바들 떨고 있었다(tremble with fear). 얼굴은 창백해지다 못해(be all pale) 백짓장처럼 새하얘졌다. 한참이 지나서야 두려움과 슬픔에 젖은 눈으로 아빠를 바라보며(look at her father with eyes filled with fear and sadness) 딸은 더듬으며 말했다.
“아빠, 나 너무 무서워. 잘못했어. 용서해주세요.”
남자는 그제야 자신이 얼마나 한심한 잘못(pathetic mistake)을 저질렀는지 깨닫고는 눈물을 떨궜다(shed tears). 차가 있는 곳으로 돌아가 수도 없이 새 차를 걷어찼다(kick it countless times).
자기가 저지른 행동에 망연자실해(be devastated by his own actions) 차 옆에 털썩 주저앉았다(flop down next to the car). 죄책감과 회한에 휩싸여(be filled with a sense of guilt and remorse) 넋이 나갔다.
그제야 어린 딸이 돌멩이로 차에 긁어댄 낙서가 눈에 들어왔다(meet his eyes).
“사랑해, 아빠(Love you Dad).”
☞ 물건은 사용되는(be used) 것이고, 사람은 사랑받는(be loved) 존재다. 그런데 오늘날 세상에선(in today’s world) 사람이 사용되고, 물건이 사랑을 받는다.
Things are to be used and people are to be loved. But in today’s world, people are used and things are loved.
